Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to question specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
