High-Level Alert for Scotland's North and West
An high-level wind alert is active for parts of northern and western Scotland, where forecasters are warning of power cuts and airborne wreckage that could threaten safety.
A less severe yellow alert for winds has been issued for all of Scotland and Northern Ireland, as well as north-west England and Wales, through to Saturday night.

Areas in Northern Ireland, Scotland, and north-west England also have a yellow rain warning in place.

The Trajectory of Storm Amy
Amy, which is the inaugural named storm this season will move to the north of the UK through Friday night, when the strongest gusts are anticipated.
A chilly weather system will also move southward, bringing intense rainfall.
Overnight, the gusts will reach their maximum across Scotland as heavy rain sweeps southeast across England and Wales, before slowly subsiding on Saturday later in the day.

Forecast for the Weekend
By Sunday, Storm Amy will have moved further out into the North Sea so it will be more settled with reduced wind for the weekend's conclusion.
The next storm name will be the name Bram. A fresh set of names is released annually by the Met Office before the September kickoff of the season with both names for both genders selected through public input.
Storms can be named by either the Met Office, Met Éireann or the Dutch weather service KNMI when consequences are expected as "significant to serious."
