Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a online statement, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had come out of the mission, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the edge of space.
The diverse crew also featured experts in different industries.
